TaleSpire Dev Log 482

Hey folks,

I’m writing this dev-log for the sake of transparency.

TLDR: We are looking into whether enabling NFSW in the community content repo affects the age rating of TaleSpire itself. AND, while we check, we are marking some nsfw minis unlisted on mod.io

TaleSpire currently has three supported ways for you to add creatures to the game.

  1. By dropping files made using TaleWeaverLite into the LocalContentPacks directory.
  2. By using integration with a 3rd party mini provider (e.g. HeroForge)
  3. By using the in-game community-content browser

Although #3 has been designed to support community-hosted repositories, we have not finished making that feature. That means that currently, many creators share their creations through a Bouncyrock-controlled repository on https://mod.io/g/TaleSpire.

Mod.io has support for hosting NSFW content if the repository owner has enabled/allowed it. We have not enabled it on our repository. Why not?

If you guessed the reason is that we don’t have in-game filters for it, you’d be on the right track. We don’t have the filters in-game, but we have laid all the groundwork for them. We did a review a few days back, and we expect adding those filters to take about two days.

The big reason we haven’t allowed it yet is that we are looking into whether enabling such filters put us in a different age/rating bracket in Steam.

TaleSpire is, out of the box, a family-friendly game, and it’s rated as such. We need to ensure that, if we make this change, we are following Steam’s rules to the letter. We really don’t want to get ourselves in any trouble.

While we look into those rules we are unlisting some of the more nsfw content, and reaching out to the nine creators affected. Their works are not deleted. We just need to know what the next step should be.

If we can add the filters, then re-listing them is a breeze. If not, we should probably prioritize support for community-hosted repositories so that content can be migrated to a new home.

We are not expecting Steam-related drama, though. As soon as we have some news, we will let you all know what’s happening

Until then, thanks for dropping by!
