TaleSpire Dev Log 380
·Greetings everyone!
I'm sure everyone is waiting for news on the Ship Tileset, and although I don't have an ETA on that yet, we are working on wrapping it up. There are so many pieces and some Tile-types we haven't done before, so there has been additional testing. One of the challenges that came up was regarding sails and ropes. Placing Props in a sequence is already a challenge, but with the Ship, it almost feels like we encourage it.
Although a future overhaul is planned to the Building System, we needed something sooner to address this case with the Ship's release.
So we're "re"introducing the concept of Attachment Points!
Attachment Points are technically not a new concept for people who have been following TaleSpire for a long time. I've publicly discussed it when introducing the Prop system back during the Alpha. We scrapped in favor of free prop placement, ultimately the right choice. There are benefits to snapping things together, however, and with the Rope and Sails needing some help, it would be worth trying it out. Holding the [x] key will enable the snapping.
The system works based on the Screen-Space position of each Attachment point. The circles shown when holding a prop shows where the Points are. It then scans the scene for the Props Attachment Points in its vicinity and matches up, creating a ghost version of the asset on the valid connection point. It works very well, even in areas with a lot of Props.
There is still some stuff to do before we can push this feature live, and we will be running it on a Beta branch for a while to get feedback on this and some format changes we'll discuss later.
Thanks for reading! Till next time.
- Ree
PS: More Ship updates are coming soon
